Als voorloper van andere aminozuren zoals cyste\u00efne en taurine, veelzijdige verbindingen zoals SAM-e (een verbinding die van nature in het lichaam wordt aangemaakt en een belangrijke rol speelt in de normale werking van het lichaam) en de belangrijke antioxidant glutathion, speelt methionine een cruciale rol in het metabolisme en de gezondheid van vele diersoorten, waaronder mensen en honden. Methionine is ook een initiator van eiwitsynthese. Het dient als voorloper van andere aminozuren zoals cyste\u00efne, dat vervolgens kan worden omgezet in taurine. Methionine kan ook worden omgezet in glutathion, een belangrijke fysiologische antioxidant.
