Wat maakt hondenvoer milieuvriendelijk en duurzaam? Moet de ecologische voetafdruk van je hond er toe doen? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Om beter te begrijpen waarom het belangrijk is, moeten we eerst kijken naar de feiten achter de impact die het voeren van onze honden heeft op het milieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geschat wordt dat onze honden momenteel ongeveer 20% van al het jaarlijks geproduceerde dierlijke vlees consumeren.(1<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landbouw, en veeteelt en dierlijke productie in het bijzonder, is verantwoordelijk voor bijna 60% van alle broeikasgassen afkomstig van voedselproductie(2<\/a>) en 14,5% van de totale uitstoot van broeikasgassen, meer dan alle transport.(3<\/a>) De veeteelt is verantwoordelijk voor 44% van het meest vernietigende gas, methaan, dat 2800% meer opwarmt dan CO2(4<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bij het evalueren van de impact op het milieu en de duurzaamheid van het hondenvoer dat we onze honden geven, kunnen we de impact van het verbouwen van het voer voor de productie van de dieren niet over het hoofd zien. Het meeste vee wordt tegenwoordig intensief gehouden en gevoed met gewassen zoals soja en ma\u00efs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deze monoculturen zijn verantwoordelijk voor massale ontbossing, overmatig gebruik van schadelijke meststoffen, vervuiling van waterwegen en aantasting van de bodem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het is niet moeilijk om te zien welke impact het voeren van onze honden met voeding gemaakt van rund-, lams-, kippen- en varkensvlees heeft op ons kwetsbare milieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat maakt het ene hondenvoer milieuvriendelijker dan het andere?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ingredi\u00ebnten en hun invloed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

De eerste overweging zijn de ingredi\u00ebnten die worden gebruikt in het voer van je hond. Hoe duurzaam zijn ze? Hebben ze bemesting nodig die schadelijk is voor het milieu? In welke hoeveelheden? Worden ze enkel geteeld of kunnen ze ook tussengewassen worden? Hoeveel irrigatie hebben ze nodig? Putten ze de voedingsstoffen in de bodem uit? Verminderen ze de biodiversiteit? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

De 4 belangrijkste gewassen – soja, ma\u00efs, tarwe en rijst – zijn de schadelijkste planten en beslaan bijna 50% van alle landbouwgrond(5<\/a>), waarbij slechts 37% van de gewassen wordt gebruikt voor directe voeding. De rest wordt gebruikt voor diervoeder, biobrandstoffen en verwerking tot andere producten zoals alcohol(6<\/a>) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Om een milieuvriendelijkere en duurzamere productie van gewassen te bevorderen, is het van vitaal belang dat we overgaan op de productie van gewassen die minder belastend zijn voor het milieu, zoals peulvruchten, waaronder kikkererwten, erwten, bonen, haver en quinoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deze gewassen zijn veel duurzamer. Ze worden beschouwd als ‘klimaatslim’, hebben minder water nodig (een grondstof die steeds schaarser wordt), minder kunstmest en kunnen worden tussengewassen (en in het geval van haver, worden gebruikt als bodembedekker, waardoor er minder herbiciden nodig zijn), waardoor de opbrengst van volggewassen toeneemt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kookmethode en de invloed ervan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In het geval van droog hondenvoer, dat ongeveer 75% van de voeding van alle honden uitmaakt(7<\/a>, 8<\/a>), heeft de manier waarop het wordt geproduceerd ook invloed op de milieuvriendelijkheid, duurzaamheid en algehele impact op het milieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het merendeel van droog hondenvoer wordt geproduceerd met behulp van korte extrusie bij hoge temperaturen. Dit proces kost veel energie en relatief veel water. De ingredi\u00ebnten worden verhit tot temperaturen van meer dan 100\u00b0C<\/strong><\/strong> en water wordt ge\u00efnjecteerd om stoom de brokjes te laten vormen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Koude extrusie<\/a> daarentegen kookt het voedsel bij temperaturen van ongeveer 70\u00b0C, waarbij minder energie en water nodig is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact van verpakking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Een andere duurzaamheidsfactor waar je rekening mee moet houden, is de verpakking van het voer voor je hond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het meeste hondenvoer wordt verpakt in polyethyleen (plastic) zakken. Hoewel veel bedrijven beweren dat ze recyclebaar zijn, wat ze strikt genomen ook zijn, is het een feit dat het merendeel van deze zakjes op stortplaatsen terechtkomt omdat er wereldwijd geen gemakkelijk beschikbare inzameling van dit soort plastic is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deze zakken worden vervolgens heel langzaam afgebroken, waarbij micro-plastic deeltjes vrijkomen in waterstromen en uiteindelijk in onze oceanen. Verontrustend genoeg worden deze microscopische parels nu ontdekt in het menselijk lichaam door onbedoelde inname via voedsel en water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoewel het nog niet de perfecte milieuvriendelijke oplossing is, bieden papieren zakken met een PLA-voering (een plantaardig vetvrij materiaal op biologische basis) zowel een composteerbaar als recyclebaar verpakkingsalternatief voor hondenvoer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vervoer en het effect ervan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Het laatste aspect van duurzaam hondenvoer dat je moet overwegen, zijn de ‘voedselkilometers’ die het voedsel aflegt vanaf de productie van de ingredi\u00ebnten tot aan de etensbak van je hond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Een typische reis van het meeste hondenvoer zodra het is geproduceerd en in zakken is gedaan, klaar om in de voerbak van je hond te scheppen, ziet er als volgt uit – hondenvoerfabriek > merkmagazijn > magazijn van distributeur > magazijn van detailhandelaar > winkel van detailhandelaar > bij jou thuis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Als je daarentegen online hondenvoer koopt van een D2C (direct to consumer) merk, ziet de reis er als volgt uit – hondenvoerfabriek > merkmagazijn > bij jou thuis – een veel milieubewustere en duurzamere manier om het voer van je hond tijdens de maaltijd in de bak te krijgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omdat onze missie bij Bonza is om onze honden te voeren op een manier die duurzamer is voor het milieu dan het bestaande regime, hebben we alle milieueffecten<\/a> van de verschillende aspecten van onze voeding overwogen – de ingredi\u00ebnten die we gebruiken, hoe en waar het wordt verbouwd, hoe het wordt geproduceerd, verpakt en bij je thuis afgeleverd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daarom gebruiken we geen vlees of de belangrijkste gewassen in ons hondenvoer – soja, tarwe, ma\u00efs of rijst – we gebruiken ‘klimaatslimme’ ingredi\u00ebnten en kopen deze ingredi\u00ebnten van boerderijen zo dicht mogelijk bij onze fabriek. We gebruiken koude extrusie als onze bereidingsmethode om de energie en het water die nodig zijn in het bereidingsproces te verminderen, we verpakken het in recyclebare en composteerbare papieren hondenvoerverpakkingen en kiezen ervoor om niet via de detailhandel te verkopen, maar direct bij je thuis te leveren vanuit ons magazijn het dichtst bij jou in de buurt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ons doel is om het meest duurzame en milieuvriendelijke hondenvoer te zijn, niet alleen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maar op de hele planeet en we doen er alles aan om ons doel te bereiken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
