‘Koolzaad giftig voor honden’- Verkeerde informatie volgens dierengifdeskundige<\/h2>\n\n

We naderen het koolzaadseizoen, met hun prachtige gele bloei die grote delen van ons platteland verandert in een vergezicht van groen en goud, dus de verhalen dat koolzaad zeer giftig is voor honden zijn talrijk – van berichten op sociale media tot de pers. Je hoeft maar terug te gaan naar de afgelopen jaren rond deze tijd in mei om deze verhalen te vinden in Country Living<\/a>, Eastern Daily Press<\/a>, Devon Live<\/a>, Surrey Live<\/a>, Birmingham Live<\/a> en Liverpool Echo<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Onder hondenbezitters is natuurlijk bezorgdheid ontstaan over de mogelijke gevaren van koolzaadbloemen, vooral wanneer deze via sociale media worden geleverd. De Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS)<\/a>, sinds 1992 een autoriteit op het gebied van gegevens over diergif, heeft deze bezorgdheid geuit over de giftigheid van koolzaad, dat herkenbaar is aan zijn felgele bloemen en voornamelijk wordt geteeld voor zijn olierijke zaden die erucazuur<\/a> bevatten. <\/p>\n\n

Online discussies hebben gesuggereerd dat koolzaad extreem giftig is voor honden en mogelijk ernstige gezondheidsproblemen kan veroorzaken zoals hemolytische anemie, blindheid, schade aan het zenuwstelsel, spijsverteringsproblemen en ademhalingscomplicaties. De VPIS heeft deze beweringen echter als overdreven ontkracht en verduidelijkt dat sommige honden na het eten van de plant een licht maag-darm ongemak<\/a> of huidreacties<\/a> kunnen ervaren, maar dat de ernstige effecten over het algemeen niet worden waargenomen. <\/p>\n\n

Nicola Robinson BSc MA VetMB MRCVS, hoofd van de afdeling VPIS<\/a>, benadrukt dat het alarm op sociale media over de giftigheid van koolzaad grotendeels gebaseerd is op verkeerde informatie<\/a>. Ze merkt op dat de symptomen die vaak worden geassocieerd met koolzaadvergiftiging in berichten op sociale media alleen typisch zijn voor grazende dieren, en dat de meeste honden geen symptomen vertonen nadat ze in contact zijn gekomen met koolzaad. Slechts in zeldzame gevallen hebben honden last van maagdarmklachten of huidreacties die kunnen lijken op brandwonden. <\/p>\n\n

Verder zei een woordvoerder van Dogs Trust dat hoewel het inslikken van koolzaad kan leiden tot braken, diarree<\/a> en buikpijn bij honden, deze symptomen meestal mild zijn. Ze voegden eraan toe dat meldingen van huidverbrandingen zeldzaam zijn en meestal voorkomen wanneer een hond door koolzaadvelden rent. Hoewel de reactie soms ernstig kan zijn, komt dit niet vaak voor. <\/p>\n\n

Hondeneigenaren wordt geadviseerd zich niet al te veel zorgen te maken, maar waakzaam te blijven. Als je je zorgen maakt over de blootstelling of inname van koolzaad door een hond, is het raadzaam om een dierenarts te raadplegen<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Dezelfde misinformatie gaat ook rond de vraag of koolzaadolie veilig is voor honden<\/a>. Onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat het niet alleen veilig is, maar zelfs zeer gezond als het deel uitmaakt van een compleet en uitgebalanceerd dieet voor honden<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
