How Long Do Dogs Live?

Across 584,734 UK dogs, breed medians run from 7.7 years to 15.4 years¹ — a spread of more than seven years, decided almost entirely before a puppy comes home. Crossbreeds sit at 12.0. Size and head shape explain most of it: small long-nosed breeds average 13.5 years, medium and large flat-faced breeds 9.8.

But breed average is the wrong question for an owner who already has a dog, for two reasons. It ignores the years your dog has already survived, which raises the expected total considerably. And it tells you nothing you can act on.

This calculator does both. It asks your dog’s age as well as breed, so it returns remaining life expectancy rather than a population figure with the age subtracted. And it separates what was decided before you brought your dog home from what is still yours to move — the ground covered in our guide to healthspan for dogs.

The curves are not illustrations. They are the actual survival curves from UK veterinary records, with the body-condition effect measured across a further 50,787 dogs.⁴

How this calculator works

Remaining life expectancy, not breed average minus age

The most common error in online lifespan tools is subtraction. They take a breed average of thirteen years, subtract your dog’s age of eleven, and tell you there are two years left.

That is not how life tables work.

A published life expectancy figure is calculated across the whole population, including every dog that died young — congenital disease, accident, conditions that present in the first years. Your eleven-year-old has already cleared all of it. Conditioning on survival to a given age raises the expected total, and keeps raising it the longer a dog lives.³

The effect is large. A female Labrador shows an expected total of 12.7 years at birth, 13.7 by age six, and 16.1 by age thirteen. Nothing about the dog changed. What changed is the population she is now compared against — dogs who also reached thirteen.

The same dog, run through a subtraction-based calculator at thirteen, would be told she is already past her expected lifespan. She isn’t. That is an artefact of bad arithmetic.

Where the curves come from

The survival curves are the published Kaplan–Meier estimates from McMillan and colleagues,¹ covering 584,734 UK dogs of which 284,734 were deceased, drawn from 18 sources including breed registries, veterinary practices, insurers and welfare charities.

Rather than fitting a smooth mathematical curve, the tool uses the empirical survival probabilities at every decimal year — by body size, and separately for crossbreeds — then time-scales that curve so its median matches the published median for the specific breed and sex. This preserves the real shape of canine mortality, including the early-life bump a modelled curve smooths away.

The tool covers 126 breeds plus crossbreeds, restricted to those with at least 50 recorded deaths. Each breed shows its own sample size and 95% confidence interval, and the confidence band is drawn on the chart. A breed with 16,155 recorded deaths gets a narrow band; one with a few hundred gets a visibly wide one. That is the honest way to show how much to trust a curve.

Where the second curve comes from

The overweight curve applies the hazard ratios measured by Salt and colleagues⁴ across 50,787 neutered dogs in twelve breeds. Excess risk is applied from 7.5 years of age, matching the point at which that study assessed body condition — an overweight middle-aged dog carried no measured excess risk as a puppy, and the model should not pretend otherwise.

For those twelve breeds the tool is calibrated to reproduce the published median difference, and labels the result measured. For all other breeds it applies the size-band average hazard ratio and labels the result estimated. The distinction is shown in the interface rather than buried.


Why two UK studies disagree about the French Bulldog

Search for French Bulldog life expectancy and you will find two very different figures, both from reputable UK research, often on the same page.

The 2022 VetCompass life tables report life expectancy at age 0 as 4.53 years³ — the shortest of eighteen breeds, and so low it looks like an error.

The 2024 analysis reports a median of 9.8 years

Both are correct. They measure different things.

Life expectancy at age 0 is a life-table quantity. It asks: for a dog born into this population today, how long would it live on average, given mortality rates at every age? In a breed whose UK population expanded enormously in a short period, the population is overwhelmingly young. Deaths are concentrated at young ages, early-year mortality rates look very high, and the life-table figure collapses.

Median survival asks a narrower question: among dogs that have died, what was the middle age at death? That strips out the distortion from a young, fast-growing population and returns something closer to what an owner experiences.

Neither is wrong. The 4.53-year figure is a real and alarming signal about mortality in a young, heavily brachycephalic population. The 9.8-year figure better answers “how long is my French Bulldog likely to live”. This calculator uses median survival for that reason, and cites the life-table work where the life-table question is the relevant one.

The Pug shows the same split: 7.7 years by the 2022 life table,³ 11.6 by the 2024 median.¹

At the extremes: Lancashire Heeler at 15.4 years and Tibetan Spaniel at 15.2 lead the list; Presa Canario at 7.7 and Cane Corso at 8.1 sit at the bottom.¹

What body condition actually costs

This is the largest modifiable factor in canine longevity, and the numbers are more specific than most owners realise.

Salt and colleagues examined 50,787 neutered dogs across twelve breeds, comparing dogs in normal body condition through middle age against those recorded as heavy at every visit between 5.5 and 9.5 years. Median lifespan was shorter in the overweight group in every single breed.⁴

The counterintuitive part

The penalty is largest in small breeds, not large ones.

That runs against most owners’ intuition and against the way weight is usually discussed. A few extra pounds on a Labrador looks like a lot and gets treated as a problem. The same proportional excess on a Yorkshire Terrier is barely visible under the coat, gets called “a bit cuddly”, and carries more than twice the risk.

If you own a small dog, this is the most useful sentence on this page.

Two breeds on that list are worth reading about in their own right. The Dachshund carries the second-highest hazard ratio and a spinal architecture that makes excess weight structurally expensive, not just metabolically. The Labrador carries a well-documented appetite variant that makes ideal condition genuinely harder to hold.

One thing the study cannot tell you

Salt’s design compared dogs that were consistently normal against dogs consistently heavy. Dogs whose condition changed were in neither group. So the study establishes that sustained overweight through middle age is associated with a shorter life — it does not, on its own, establish how much is recovered by a dog that slims down at seven.

For that, the evidence is thinner but points the same way. Penell and colleagues, following Labradors to end of life, found that body weight at ten years and change in body composition between eight and ten were both related to survival.⁸ Late is not the same as too late.


The one randomised trial

Almost everything written about diet and canine longevity is observational. There is one exception, and it is routinely misquoted.

Kealy and colleagues took 48 Labrador Retrievers from seven litters, paired them within litters by sex and weight, and randomly assigned one of each pair to be fed 25% less than its littermate.⁵ Feeding began at eight weeks and continued until death. Both groups ate the same complete, balanced food; only the quantity differed. The last dog died at 14.5 years.⁶

Lifespan: median 13.0 years lean-fed against 11.2 control-fed.⁵ An extra 1.8 years, about 15%.

Healthspan, which matters more:

  • First treatment for any chronic condition: 12.0 years lean-fed against 9.9 control-fed.⁵
  • Dogs that did develop chronic conditions were on average 2.1 years older when they did.⁵
  • Osteoarthritis treatment was deferred by around three years in the lean-fed group.⁵ ⁷
  • By two years of age, hip dysplasia was half as frequent in the lean-fed group, and less severe.⁵

The joint findings are not incidental. Excess weight and joint disease reinforce one another through inflammatory pathways set out in the gut-joint axis and, at greater length, in arthritis starts in the gut.

What the study does not show

It is not a dieting study. The intervention began at eight weeks and ran for life. It is evidence about maintaining lean condition from puppyhood, not evidence that an overweight seven-year-old recovers 1.8 years by losing weight.

The control group was not a normal pet dog. Controls were free-fed and, in the researchers’ description, uniformly overweight. The 1.8-year gap is the distance between free-fed overweight and lean.

It is 48 dogs of one breed in a research colony. The direction is robust and consistent with other species. The exact figure is not transferable to a Chihuahua. That is why the calculator shows it as a labelled reference line rather than a prediction, and hides it entirely for dogs aged seven and over — showing an owner a line they can no longer reach is not useful information.

What to take from it

Not a percentage. Do not go home and cut your dog’s food by a quarter — that figure describes a controlled trial with a complete balanced diet and lifelong veterinary monitoring. Applied casually at home it risks malnutrition, and in an older dog unplanned weight loss needs a vet, not a smaller bowl.

Life stage runs on breed time, not calendar time

“Senior at seven” is one of the most misleading rules of thumb in dog ownership.

A Great Dane at six has used most of its expected lifespan. A Jack Russell at ten has not. Treating both the same means senior screening starts too late in large breeds and causes unnecessary worry in small ones.

The calculator positions your dog against its own breed’s expected span:

  • Puppy — under one year
  • Young adult — up to a quarter of expected lifespan
  • Mature adult — a quarter to three quarters
  • Senior — the final quarter
  • Geriatric — past the breed median

The practical consequence is when to change what you do. Senior-stage dogs benefit from twice-yearly veterinary checks rather than annual, closer monitoring of weight and muscle mass, and earlier attention to mobility and dental disease. For a giant breed that point arrives around seven, not eleven.

The two most neglected modifiable factors

The limits of this tool, stated plainly

  • Every figure is a population average. Individual dogs vary enormously.
  • Breeds with fewer than 50 recorded deaths are excluded rather than shown with a number that cannot bear weight.
  • The confidence band on the chart is real. A wide band means the median is uncertain.
  • The body-condition effect is measured for twelve breeds and estimated for the rest, and the tool says which.
  • The Kealy reference line is trial data from 48 Labradors, shown as a reference and hidden for dogs aged seven and over.
  • Underweight dogs get no curve comparison. Low body condition is more often a sign of illness than a cause of shortened life, and modelling it as a lifestyle factor would be misleading.
  • Salt’s cohort was neutered dogs in North America, aged 5.5 to 9.5 years.⁴ Extrapolation beyond that should be cautious.
  • Educational only. Not a diagnosis, not a substitute for your vet.

How accurate is a dog life expectancy calculator?

Accurate as a description of populations, unreliable as a prediction for one animal. The breed curves come from 584,734 UK dogs¹ and the body-condition effect from 50,787 more,⁴ so the averages are solid. Your individual dog depends on genetics, disease and chance, none of which a calculator can see.

Why does my dog’s expected total go up as it gets older?

Because published figures include dogs that died young. Once your dog has passed those ages it is no longer in that risk pool.³ Standard life-table behaviour — it applies to humans too.

Do overweight dogs really live shorter lives?

Yes, and it has been measured. Across 50,787 dogs in twelve breeds, median lifespan was shorter in dogs kept overweight through middle age in every breed studied — from five months in German Shepherds to two and a half years in Yorkshire Terriers.⁴ Check your dog with the body condition checker.

Is it too late if my dog is already overweight and middle-aged?

No, though the evidence for late correction is weaker than for never getting there. Work following Labradors to end of life found body weight at ten years, and change in body composition between eight and ten, both related to survival.⁸ If your dog is in the senior band, plan the reduction with your vet rather than alone.

Should I feed my dog 25% less to make it live longer?

No. That trial used a complete balanced diet under lifelong veterinary supervision from eight weeks of age.⁵ Applied casually at home it risks malnutrition. The target is ideal body condition, reached gradually and measured properly — start with the feeding calculator.

Why do French Bulldogs have two completely different published lifespans?

Which dog breeds live longest?

In the UK data, Lancashire Heeler (15.4 years), Tibetan Spaniel (15.2) and Shiba Inu (14.6) lead.¹ Small, long-nosed breeds do best as a group. At the other end, Presa Canario (7.7), Cane Corso (8.1) and Mastiff (9.0) are shortest-lived.

Does head shape really affect lifespan?

Substantially. Medium and large flat-faced breeds average 9.8 years against 12.9 for medium-sized medium-nosed breeds¹ — a gap of more than three years.

Does neutering affect life expectancy?

Population data generally shows longer average lifespans in neutered dogs, with a shifted profile of eventual cause of death and trade-offs around timing that vary by breed.³ A conversation for your vet rather than a slider on a calculator.

When does my dog become a senior?
